Google Fiber is coming home to San Francisco

Google has been rolling out its superfast Fiber internet service in markets around the United States and now the company is bringing it back to home base.

Fiber is coming to some apartments and condos in San Francisco, as well as ‘affordable housing projects.’

San Fran will become the 22nd named Fiber location and will tap into the city’s existing Fiber network, rather than benefit from a new infrastructure.

By using existing fiber to connect some apartments and condos, as we’ve done before, we can bring service to residents more quickly,” the company wrote.

“This approach will allow us to serve a portion of San Francisco, complementing the City’s ongoing efforts to bring abundant, high-speed Internet to the City by the Bay.”

Google said it also wants to help some San Fran residents get online for the first time.

As part of the initiative, some properties will get the gigabit service for free.

The firm says there’s still plenty of work to do, but residents can now sign up for updates.

San Francisco is the 9th city where Fiber is now in the works, while the service is already available in Atlanta, Kansas City, Provo and Austin.

Potential locations include Chicago, Tampa, Los Angeles and San Diego.
