Google Cast is the new name for the Chromecast app

Google has moved to simplify its Cast streaming platform by changing the name of its Google Chromecast apps to Google Cast.

While Google Cast has long been the name of the technology that sends content from A to B, Google has until now chosen to name its mobile apps after the Chromecast and Chromecast Audio dongles.

That all changes this week, when new apps roll out to iOS and Android users.

In a post on the Chrome blog (via Engadget), the company explained: “We’re also changing the name of the Chromecast app to Google Cast app, to better reflect that Google Cast technology is now supported across a wide range of devices such as Chromecast, TVs, displays and speakers. The Google Cast app makes it easy for you to discover great stuff to watch, find more apps, customize backdrop, and more.”

The move follows the launch of a host of new Vizio 4K HDR televisions and speakers centred around Google’s streaming platform.

The P-Series sets have Cast built in and also come with a 6-inch Android tablet that handles the streaming of content to the TV. Cast will also be built into new Vizio soundbars and speakers.
