Google and Asus might not be ditching the Nexus Player after all

Last week it was reported that Google was discontinuing its Nexus Player media streaming device, as the product disappeared from the Google Store.

At the time, Google made an announcement about being able to get the device, co-developed with Asus and based on the Android TV platform, through other retail sites.

That seemingly confirmed that the company would no longer be making or selling the device, but new documents filed with the FCC in the US by Asus now seem to suggest the opposite.

The documents indicate that a new Nexus Player, with minor changes, is in the works, with Asus listing a number of improvements.

These include: updated system power circuit and layout, updated RF circuit and layout, updated circuit components such as the USB, HDMI, and power button, and a modified antenna layout.

None of the changes suggest this will be a big upgrade to the original player, which was launched in 2014.

But it does bode well for the future of the Android TV media device, after many had written it off following last week’s developments.

However, it’s entirely possible that these documents were submitted for a model which was already being developed, and that may never make it into production.
