go-e ONwheel turns your bike into an electric bike

Cycling is great fun, but sometimes you want to get where you’re going quicker, or want to get up a hill without tiring yourself out. That’s where the go-e ONwheel comes in.

It converts your standard pedal bike into an electric bike. The motor itself has no cables to connect. Just slot it in and you’re ready to go. According to the makers, once you’ve installed the handlebar speed control, pedal sensor and battery mount (which they have managed to do in under four minutes) you can mount and unmount the motor itself in just five seconds. Start pedalling, and it starts giving you a little extra help once you hit 6kmh.

You can choose how much extra power it gives you using buttons on your handlebars. Or if you’re feeling active, you can disable it altogether. With up to 800W of additional power, you’ll fly up a hill in double-quick time.

Cycling on a moderate power setting will give you a battery range of about 60km (37 miles). EU regulations say you can only use 250W and a maximum speed of 25km/h (15mph). But in theory, you could use the full 800W and propel yourself at a whopping 45km/h (28mph). We would advise wearing a helmet at any speed.

There’s an app too. You can connect your phone to the device over Bluetooth and read the actual speed, power, battery charge level and estimated remaining distance. You can also configure speed levels – which you can also do using buttons on your handlebars – and set the maximum speed and power. You can even charge your phone using the USB port on your handlebars.

It’s flown past its funding goal and is due to ship in October. It starts at €399 (£292), though that particular reward level has already sold out so if you want one you’ll need to put in an extra €100.
