Gmail mobile web apps get iOS-like refresh

It wasn’t so long ago that the Gmail app for iOS devices was Google’s ugly step-child. Following a disastrous launch in late 2011, it was pulled almost instantly, forcing the Mountain View-based company into a complete rethink.

Naturally, the company did much better second time around and when Gmail for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch relaunched with a completely revamped the look and feel, back in December.

After that, the app quickly became the belle of the ball thanks to improved search, the ability to add multiple accounts, as well as Calendar and Google Plus integration.

In fact, so popular was the relaunched Gmail client for Apple’s mobile devices that Google has now decided to implement the design and user interface across the mobile web for those accessing Gmail though a web browser on their smartphone or tablet.

In a post on Gmail’s own Google Plus page, the company outlined the new look for iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Kindle Fire devices, as well as the Gmail Offline app for Google Chrome.

The post reads: “Since launching the rebooted Gmail app for iPhone and iPad in December, we’ve heard from many of you that you like the redesigned UI, along with new features such as improved search and integration with Google Calendar.

“Today we’re rolling out a similar refreshed look to the Gmail mobile web app as well as Gmail Offline that includes many of these same changes. Try it out at gmail.com in the browser of your Android, iOS, Blackberry or Kindle Fire device.”
