Gmail for Android redesign brings Yahoo and Outlook support

Google has updated its Gmail app for Android, and with it comes a bold new design and support for other email accounts.

In something of a splurge, Google has updated both its Calendar app and Gmail app for Android over the past 24 hours.

As with the new Calendar app, the new Gmail brings the company’s Material Design over from Android 5.0 Lollipop. That means fluid animated transitions and a bold palette of colours, as well as a  complete rethink of how elements flow together.

But the Gmail app adds a few big new features too. Arguably the most important of those is support for other email accounts, such as Yahoo and Outlook. This is massive, as Gmail has always been a self-contained affair, necessitating the irritating use of an Android device’s default email app (or a Google Play Store alternative) in addition to Google’s slick effort.

Google also points out that the new Gmail app adds a reply button to the bottom of every message. The app has also been optimised for Android tablets (pictured), making it easier to switch between accounts and different inbox categories on the larger form factor.

The new Gmail app supports all Android devices running on Android 4.0 and above. Look out for the update in the Google Play Store over the coming days.
