Game of Thrones to be first TV show screened in IMAX

If you needed proof Game of Thrones was one of the biggest TV shows ever, here it is: the show will be the first to be broadcast in IMAX cinemas.

Two episodes from series four and the trailer for series five will be shown in IMAX cinemas from January 23-29, Deadline reports. Series five is set to air this spring.

The Watchers on the Wall and The Children are the two episodes to get the IMAX treatment. For more info, check out imax.com.

“The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format,” Pamela Levine, HBO’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement. “We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show, and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.”

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond added: “IMAX always seeks innovative ways to provide moviegoers a unique and differentiated experience and today’s partnership with HBO and Game of Thrones achieves just that.

“This deal also furthers our efforts to offer exhibitors the opportunity to participate in alternative forms of content in a new and exciting way.”

Season five of Game of Thrones is thought to start in April, at the same time that the show’s maker HBO will launch its standalone streaming service.
