As 2017 draws to a close, it’s not surprising to see leaks about phones due to debut in the next year – the Galaxy S9 included. The latest such leak suggests that Samsung’s next phone won’t feature a headphone jack.
It is expected that Samsung will launch its usual flagship duo in March/April, as per tradition. According to the leaks we’ve already seen, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will feature more secure facial recognition, made possible by 3D mapping technology. This is similar to Apple’s recently announced Face ID system, which launched on the new iPhone X.
A more recent leak states that the S9 devices will follow the new trend that the iPhones and Pixel devices have picked up on: no headphone jack. While this is not really an issue due to an adapter dongle being provided with such phones – as well as the increasing availability of Bluetooth headphones – many users still seem upset about the feature disappearing.
The rumoured Galaxy S9 devices look set to feature the same slim-bezel design that we’ve seen on the S8 and Note 8 devices this year. In addition, Samsung is apparently working on embedding a fingerprint sensor under the glass display. However, this was rumoured to be featured on the iPhone X and never appeared, suggesting that this type of technology may still be a while off.
Finally, leaked schematics say that the new devices will feature a dual 16 MP rear camera – similar to on the Note 8 – and a dual 12-megapixel front-facing camera, possibly for the 3D mapping used in facial recognition. It is likely that the dual rear camera will feature a telephoto lens (also seen on the Note 8), and the dual front camera could be used for high-quality depth-sensing.
Headphone jack or no headphone jack, the Galaxy S9 devices will probably set the bar for 2018 phones like the S8 phones did this year.
