The Samsung Galaxy S8 might have a dual rear camera, according to a patent application.
Early rumours about the Galaxy S8 featuring a dual rear camera may prove true thanks to a recent patent filing in South Korea.
The patent - filed last week - shows a camera interface with improved zoom control. Rather than the pinch-to-zoom method currently employed on Galaxy models the patent suggests that zoom could become a one finger gesture.
Here's the patent filing for the Galaxy S8 - be warned, it's in Korean. Of greater use is this picture taken from it, which hints at one touch zoom:
So, why is this such a big deal? Well, a dual camera setup can use a telephoto zoom - like the iPhone 7 Plus does - which would be a serious step up in zoom capability for Samsung.
Such an improved zoom capability would call for a seriously improved zoom interface. Which is exactly what the patent shows by demonstrating a one finger zoom. Ergo, the Samsung Galaxy S8 could well have a dual camera setup on the rear.
One finger zooming isn’t implausible. Samsung does already use one finger gestures in its camera app - most specifically in controlling exposure.
Samsung would certainly be on-trend by adding a dual camera. Since the camera setup was debuted by Apple on the iPhone 7 Plus, speculation has grown that the Huawei Mate 9 could also sport the double camera setup.
We don’t know the full details yet, though, and speculation based on patent filings should definitely be taken with a pinch of salt. We’ll be sure to update you when we get anything more concrete.
