Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge drop Samsung branding in Japan

O Samsung, Samsung! Wherefore art thou Samsung?

Samsung has seemingly abandoned its own branding for the Japanese release of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

The South Korean electronics giant’s flagship smartphones will still carry the ‘Galaxy’ logo, but there will be no mention of Samsung.

Instead, the devices will be stamped with ‘Docomo’ and ‘au’, to reflect the Japanese network providers offering the phones.

According to The Korea Herald, Samsung still hasn’t gained a ‘firm footing’ in Japan, with many customers opting for Apple devices instead.

Despite this, a Samsung spokesperson was reported as saying: “We think the Galaxy brand has been well established in Japan.”

Market research firm Strategy Analytics reveals that Samsung phones only accounted for around 5.6 per cent of smartphone sales in Japan last year.

That’s in contrast to the company’s far more impressive 25.1 per cent global smartphone market share.

It’s worth mentioning that Apple, meanwhile, snapped up 40.8 per cent of Japan’s market. Sony followed this with 18.1 per cent, after which came Sharp with 12.4 per cent, and then Fujitsu with 8.8 per cent.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are set to go on sale in Japan from Thursday, April 23, although the company hasn’t released any estimates on expected sales figures.

Samsung has previously pledged to sell upwards of 70 million handsets worldwide; this includes both devices.
