Full game support for Oculus Rift is "years away", says Dying Light dev

Key Dying Light developer has said he believes full AAA game support for the Oculus Rift is still "years away".

Maciej Binkowski, Lead Game Designer on Dying Light has revealed he believes full AA game support for the Oculus Rift isn't going to happen any time soon.

"How long do I think it will take games to adapt to Oculus Rift? Honestly, years," said Binkowski in an interview with TrustedReviews. "Maybe if somebody creates a certain kind of project especially for Oculus from the ground up, I think it’s possible today."

"But, with that level of complexity like Dying Light, I think it’s going to take years. To get it to a point where gamers can comfortably play for three hours on a couch, I think it’s going to take years. Not just from the technological game perspective, but from the hardware too."

Dying Light is currently being developed to play on the Oculus Rift and we managed to play it for around 20 minutes before we felt very sick indeed.

That's because there are a number of things game developers and Oculus as a company need to fix before it can be complete.

For example, the fact your eyes feel like you're moving, while your body isn't moving makes for a very bizarre sensation. Then, your eyes get tired very quickly because they are having to compensate for fake depth of field created by the games.

"Also, when we’re looking, often we’re not moving our head. We just use our eyeballs and that’s enough. With Oculus, it’s not. Perhaps they can develop this hardware to a point were it actually follows our eyeballs and somehow incorporates that."

There are also issues with rendering the UI, in particular with Dying Light. That's down to the fact the Oculus Rift screens are curved, meaning games have to be rendered on a barrel like structure.
