Friday the 13th: The Game revealed and up on kickstarter

Jason Voorhees returns in an all new Friday The 13th title, a third-person asymmetrical multiplayer experience.

It’s finally time to relive the nostalgic slasher classic, so long as it gets funded on Kickstarter anyway.

Friday The 13th: The Game was announced yesterday, and has since made almost $250,000 on the crowdfunding platform.

Gun Media and developer IIIfonic are partnering up to create the game, which will be coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The third person, asymmetrical multiplayer title will see one player control the infamous Jason Voorhees, while seven others play as camp counselors.

Players must do their best to survive the night, outwitting Jason by using anything they can find in the “semi-open world” of Camp Crystal Lake.

“It’s a classic horror fan’s dream, no shaky cam, no found footage,”  the developers said.

“We want you to know we’re revitalizing the golden era of slashers, and putting you at the controls of each horrific, blood-splattered moment.”

The Kickstarter campaign is hoping to raise a minimum of $700,000 to finance the project, with over a third raised in less than 24 hours.

The idea for a new Friday The 13th game emerged when franchise creator Sean Cunningham approached the developers in early 2015.

“That’s when things got awesome,” the developers said. “Sean came to us in early 2015, but we quickly discovered these weren’t the normal business conversations you would have when you try to secure a license as important as Friday the 13th.”

“It was totally different. It was a conversation built on mutual admiration and respect for what each had created.”

“Sean immediately noticed the passion we had for Friday the 13th, and after several incredible meetings over the next few months, we decided to upgrade our plans for Summer Camp and embrace the Friday the 13th video game license.”

Gun Media wishes to avoid the traditional publishing route to maintain the ludicrous violence, nudity and gore the franchise is renown for.

Partnering with a well known publisher would have come with a number of compromises to the project, and this isn’t what the devs want:

“We don’t want that. You don’t want that,” they said. “We’re not interested in compromising what made the film franchise so popular. We’re interested in building precisely what we, as fans, want.”

“The ultimate Friday the 13th experience. Blood, guts, gore, brutal kills, and more. You want an experience true to the films, and so do we.”

Friday the 13th will will run on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, and is a multiplayer only title for the time being.

Gun Media has said it will consider a single-player campaign if the Kickstarter happens to perform above their expectations.

It is scheduled to launch in October 2016 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
