FreedomPop’s free WhatsApp SIM could be everything you need

FreedomPop, the upstart MVNO, has announced a new tariff that offers all-inclusive WhatsApp use for absolutely no money whatsoever.

The WhatsApp Basic plan features all of the talking, texting, media sharing  you could possibly desire, so long as you’re doing it through the Facebook-owned communications app.

The free SIM also gives you the bare bones of 100 minutes of regular talk time, 100 SMS messages and 200MB of internet data for light users.

It also includes roaming in 30 countries around the world and providing you stay within your limits it’s still absolutely free. Providing you’re heavily reliant on Wi-Fi rather than data, there’s not much to dislike bout this deal.

There’s not really a catch as FreedomPop, which launched in the UK last September, is banking on luring you on its admittedly cheap-as-chips plans that offer more data and unlimited voice and text.

Unfortunately, the WhatsApp SIM only looks like its open to customers in the US and Spain right now, but FreedomPop says it is looking to bring it to other countries too.

There really is no reason anyone should have to pay for voice and text in today’s environment,” Chris Chen, FreedomPop’s SVP of product, told VentureBeat.

“Over-the-top communication services like WhatsApp have eliminated the need for traditional voice and text services that carriers still force U.S. users to pay hundreds of dollars a year for The zero-rated model is gaining traction in more developing countries, and FreedomPop is leading the way here in the U.S.”
