It has long been thought Apple will fit the iPhone 6S with a Force Touch display and now we’ve got the first indications of how that might work.
According to 9to5Mac sources, the tech debuted by the Apple Watch will have a wide range of uses across the iOS 9 operating system on the new handsets.
While the Watch tech is designed to present the wearer with more options that don’t fit on the screen, the larger-screened iteration will enable iPhone 6S users to skip button presses, according to the report.
“There is consistent usage of Force Touch across the operating system to ‘shortcut’ actions,” the source said.
So, for example, within the Maps app, using Force Touch on a pinned destination would immediately begin turn-by-turn directions.
There’ll also be uses on the home screen, according to the report. Users will be able to customise an action for various core apps, such as using Force Touch on the phone app to access Voicemail in a single press.
Some of the Force Touch features from the 2015 MacBook’s trackpad will also be carried over onto the new touchscreen, the report claims.
So, users will be able to see a preview of a website by deep pressing a hyperlink in Safari, while doing likewise for a word will summon a definition.
The company is also planning to open up the tech to third-party developers, the source said.

If the report turns out to be true Apple will show off the new display at the forthcoming launch event, rumoured to be taking place on September 9.
