Here’s something a little different from Kickstarter. Instead of another portable phone charger or a bike with new add-ons, it’s a simple but very cool little gizmo: a light bulb that floats.
It’s called Flyte and it uses magnets to hover above the wooden block that acts as its base. It’s designed in Sweden, and the block is made of sustainably-sourced oak, ash and walnut. It uses an energy efficient LED rated at 50,000 hours. Or, to put it in real terms, 12 hours a day for 11 years. Or six hours a day for 22 years.
The bulb is shatterproof, so you don’t have to worry about someone knocking into it. It works wirelessly, with the 5V transmitted through the air from the block to the bulb, lighting it up.
The magnets centre the bulb and straighten it, so it’s always in place.
You can also buy the custom series, which features a handmade diamond-cut wooden base. Each is unique and numbered, and is made in Sweden from elm wood.
To turn it off and on, just touch the base with your finger. The bulb stays levitating, but will light up or switch off. Couldn’t be simpler.
