First 20th Anniversary Edition PS4 fetches £86,000 at auction

The very first 20th Aniversary Edition PS4 console has sold in a Japanese auction for a staggering £86,000.

Sony launched the limited edition PS4 console, which sports a PS One-style light grey livery, in December. It celebrated 20 years since the launch of the original PlayStation console.

Only 12,300 examples were ever produced, however, which has automatically made it something of a hot commodity prone to inflated prices on auction sites.

It’s perhaps understandable that model number ‘00001/12300’ (as the console’s plaque reads) would fetch the highest prize, but few could have predicted quite how high that price would be.

The Japanese Yahoo Auction closed with a winning bid of 15.135 million yen, or around £85,768. A Sony representative revealed to the Wall Street Journal that the company was “surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations.”

While you might think that Sony could do with the money in light of recent financial woes, all of the proceeds from the auction will be paid to charity, along with a matching gift from the company.

The PS4 in general has sold some 18.5 million units since its launch in November 2013, making it the best-selling console of the current generation.
