Initial stock of the Firefox OS ZTE Open smartphone has sold out on eBay in the UK and US.

ZTE turned to eBay in the US and UK to sell its first Firefox OS handset, with the first batch going up on Friday, August 16. However, all of this initial stock has now sold out in just three days.

Retailing for £59.99 in the UK, and $79.99 in the US, the ZTE Open was released on Friday and has proved so popular that there’s no stock left until the next production run.

“We will make more Open available on eBay in September", said a ZTE spokesperson.

Available completely SIM-free and network unlocked, the ZTE Open runs the new Firefox OS, which is a HTML-based operating system.

“Mozilla is dedicated to moving the Web forward as a platform for innovation and building products that people love,” said Dr. Li Gong, Senior VP of Mobile Devices at Mozilla. “We are pleased that now we will put the full power of the Web in even more people’s hands. With a great potential user base, we know that even more developers around the world will create their apps with new APIs to stimulate an inspiring new wave of innovation.”

The ZTE Open has a 3.5-inch 320 x 480p resolution screen and runs on a single-core 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Although far from a spec powerhouse to rival the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and LG G2, the ZTE Open is focused on the Firefox OS, which treats HTML 5 apps as native.

This would make sure that any apps developed on the Firefox OS will be easily transferable to iOS and Android platforms.

The Firefox OS smartphone was originally launched in Spain in July last year with Telefonica. The ZTE Open was then launched in Venezuela and Colombia.
