Firefox 2.0 Released Today

Get 'em while they're hot.

While Release Candidate 3 may have thrown a last minute spanner in the works it now appears that all is once again well in Mozilla central with today’s official launch of Firefox 2.0.

Though the site has yet to officially update, Mozilla brings us the latest and greatest version of its popular browser on this the very 24th of a particularly wet October. Development of this edition has been far from smooth with uncharacteristic delays plaguing its rollout but perhaps some sympathy can be garnered since – with the recent arrival of IE7 – this is the biggest release for Mozilla since Firefox began.

A whole host of new features have been added to keep Microsoft’s browser firmly in the shade including anti-phishing tools, inline spell checking and built in session restore while close buttons have been added to each tab and the interface has been slightly re-jigged. Windows, Linux and Mac OS X editions all appear simultaneously and my eagle eyes spotted them sneakily burrowed away on the site’s ftp here.

Note it is worth checking that your favourite third party Firefox plug-ins work with the final version before taking the plunge, but otherwise dive on in. I can tell you from experience the water is lovely.
