FIFA 14 has become the latest high-profile game to avoid a Wii U release, with EA revealing it has scrapped plans to bring the iconic football sim to Nintendo’s latest console.

The latest in a recent series of blows for Nintendo’s 2012 released Wii U console, EA has suggested that poor Wii U based sales of last year’s FIFA 13 offering has cause it to reassess its options and scrap altogether a FIFA 14 launch for the ailing console.

"Six months ago FIFA 13 was a launch title on Wii U," an official EA spokesperson said speaking with Eurogamer. "Although the game featured FIFA's award-winning HD gameplay and innovative new ways to play, the commercial results were disappointing. We have decided not to develop FIFA 14 on Wii U."

Far from the only high-profile franchise to be confirmed as avoiding a Nintendo Wii U release, EA has also recently announced that American Football behemoth Madden 25 will focus on PS3 and Xbox 360 as opposed to Nintendo’s gamer.

"We will not be releasing a Wii U version of Madden NFL in 2013," EA said. "However, we have a strong partnership with Nintendo and will continue to evaluate opportunities for delivering additional Madden NFL products for Nintendo fans in the future."

Despite being keen to assure Wii U owners that it has not completely turned its back on the console, EA spokesperson Jeff Brown last week declared: “We have no games in development for the Wii U currently.”

FIFA 14 was formally unveiled last month as the next instalment to the much loved franchise. Building on past successes, FIFA 14 will add a number of new features for PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers later this year, it is not currently known if the game will land for PS4 or Xbox 720 devices.
