Apple has published its annual lists of the best performing iPhone and iPad apps, with Facebook taking the top honours in 2014.

The social network’s Facebook Messenger app was the most downloaded free iPhone app this year, largely down to the company forcing users to download it in order to continue using the chat service on their mobiles.

Following popular messaging app Snapchat and YouTube, the main Facebook app and the company’s Instagram photo sharing app rounded out the top five.

There were few surprises elsewhere in the list with Pandora Radio, Google Maps and Spotify also appearing in the top ten.

In terms of paid iPhone apps, Minecraft: Pocket Edition was beaten to the top spot by the Heads Up! word game, while photo editing app Afterlight and the long-time favourite Plague Inc. game also appeared in the top four.

Minecraft did secure the honour of the most popular paid app for iPads, while Cut The Rope 2, the brilliant The Room Two game and Plants vs. Zombies HD also performed well.

Naturally, YouTube, Netflix, Skype, Microsoft Word (which is now free to use on iOS), Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans were among the most popular free apps for the iOS tablet.
