Rumours of an improved iPad mini 4 appear to have been supported by a file discovered in Apple’s OS X El Capitan.
Apple received a bit of stick last year with the launch of the iPad mini 3. Here was a compact tablet that was essentially the same as the iPad mini 2, but with the minor addition of a Touch ID home button.
It’s been rumoured for some time now that Apple was working on a proper upgrade for this year’s iPad mini 4. Now a file discovered in the early developer preview of OS X El Capitan seems to confirm that a new, faster iPad mini is indeed in the works.
It requires a little deduction to come to that conclusion, however.
As 9to5Mac points out, the above resource file from OS X El Capitan’s Safari 9 web browser has been discovered, indicating iPad mini support for iOS 9’s split-screen function.
Also, a developer tool has been identified in El Capitan that allows one to simulate websites running in split-screen view on an iPad mini 3 – something that simply won’t be possible in the final version of iOS 9.

We known that of the current iPad roster, only the iPad Air 2 will support iOS 9’s split-screen function owing to technical demands that only its powerful A8X processor can currently meet. The iPad mini 3, as mentioned above, still sports the iPad mini 2’s A7 CPU.
Logic would suggest that this means Apple has a new iPad mini in the works with an A8-or-higher CPU at its core.
