Fallout 4 story takes place “mostly after” Fallout 3 events

Fallout 4 will take mostly take place after Fallout 3, despite a pre-apocalyptic opening.

The prologue for Fallout 4 takes place immediately before the nuclear apocalypse, placing you in a suburban home with a loving family; so you fondly remember the moments before everything went to hell.

This is done purposely for dramatic effect, according to game director Todd Howard in a recent interview with The Telegraph.

“It needs to be a prologue”, he stated. “It’s important to us to let you experience that world, so that when you emerge from the vault you feel the sense of loss and think ‘I wish this was the way it was’”.

“Having the beginning and having the sense that stuff is all gone? That you’ve lost everything? That is important.”

It was unclear from the E3 presentation how long we may spend in the pre-apocalyptic Boston setting of Fallout 4, will we be given the freedom to explore and take in our surroundings?

It could just be a glorified character creation tool but having the ability to briefly explore a pre-war Fallout world is a fantastic idea.

If Fallout 4 takes place many years after the previous installment, we could very well see returning characters or ramifications from the events that took place in the Capital Wasteland.

Howard also mentioned how VATS – the Vault Tech Assisted Targeting System from previous games – will utilised in the upcoming sequel.

The system has been adjusted to make the game a “bit more dynamic”, as time is now slowed as you enter the targeting system whereas in previous games it simply stopped altogether.

“It’s very very slow and you’ll see the percentages change because the person is moving or coming out behind a wall. So queuing up a shot at the right time matters.” Howard explained.

“Criticals are not random, you assign which shot is the critical one and load up that bar.”

Fallout 4’s game mechanics are already looking far more cohesive than in previous games, providing more player choice than ever.

The Fallout 4 release date is set for November 10 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
