Facebook trials new timeline profile design

Facebook has begun trialling a new profile design that sees the user’s Timeline brought back into one column.

Being trialled in New Zealand only at the moment, the new design has a larger left hand column for better showing Timeline information, with the right side now only used for extra features such as photo galleries and maps, which are now fixed in place. The previous/current design had messages and other updates span two evenly sized left and right columns.

The new Facebook redesign is supposed to create a cleaner, easier to navigate Facebook profile with greater emphasis on messages.

Facebook Profile Changes

The top section of the Facebook profile has also been tweaked, with the Photos, Friends and Maps thumbnails replaced by tabs for Timeline, About, Friends, etc.

Initial reactions to the layout seem positive with users claiming it does indeed look tidier, and we would count ourselves among them. In particular, we found the previous two column layout somewhat confusing with the way it sometimes had messages on the left and sometimes on the right, so we prefer the idea of this new layout, even if it does mean that space is wasted in the right hand column once you scroll further down the page. With most users more intent on looking at their latest messages and updates, we don’t see the redundent right hand column being a major problem for most users, though.

Facebook has confirmed that there are no plans for the new design to roll out to the rest of the world yet but given that a smaller scale trial of a similar layout was undertaken back in October and that other tweaks that have gone worldwide have been tested in New Zealand first, it would seem a fair bet that we’ll all soon be getting used to this new one column Facebook Timeline.
