Facebook may be preparing to add a friend-to-friend payment system to its Messenger, it’s been revealed.
In fact, Facebook Messenger is all ready and able to handle such a payment system – the social network giant simply needs to flip the switch to set it live.
That’s the news that has emerged from a set of leaked screenshots over on TechCrunch.
The site has obtained screenshots and even video of the new feature in action, courtesy of a computer science student using iOS app exploration developer tool Cycript.
It seems as if Facebook Messenger users will soon be able to send money to friends in much the same casual way as they would a picture. All you’ll need is to add a debit card (which may already be on Facebook’s files) and set up a pin code, and you’ll be away.
It’s not yet known whether Facebook will charge a fee for the service, or will simply run it for free to drive usage of the Messenger app itself.
Facebook has been planning a move into mobile payments for some time now, of course. The company recently hired PayPal president David Marcus to head up its Messenger app, and now it seems evident why.
Back in July, Mark Zuckerberg told investors that Messenger wouldn’t incorporate mobile payments for some time yet, but it seems as if it could now be just around the corner.
