Facebook could be set to announce its own search engine, according to recent reports.

The king of social networks is set to hold an event at its head quarters later today at 5pm UK time. So far the nature of this announcement has remained a complete mystery - at least in terms of officially confirmed news.

The internet has been rife with speculation as to what Mark Zuckerberg might be announcing. Some have gone back to the rumours of a Facebook phone, whilst some jokers have suggested that Facebook will close down altogether.

Arguably the most interesting suggestion comes from Pocket-lint, which suggests that Facebook will be announcing a Facebook search engine.

Whilst details are sketchy, sources claim that the company will launch a "search feature" for the service "very soon."

Facebook search Rumours
Facebook's current search facility is fairly basic, allowing you to look for people, products, places and the like. This new Facebook search facility is expected to really expand upon this, potentially giving Google something to think about into the process.

After all, those whose primary interaction with the web is through Facebook now, an integrated search function would remove the need to navigate away to a separate search engine. It would also enable users to install Facebook as their homepage.

This could be seen as something of a riposte to Google - the search giant's own Facebook-rivaling social network. Facebook currently doesn't allow Google to catalogue its pages, potentially leading the way to its own advanced search feature.

What do you think? Would you like to see Facebook branching out into search, or should it still to mastering social networking first? Let us know via the Trusted Reviews Facebook or Twitter feeds, or take to the comments box below.
