Facebook reveals how much time we really spend on it

Facebook now accounts for one in every five minutes that smartphone users spend on their mobiles.

That’s according to new figures about US Facebook usage revealed by the social network in its second-quarter earnings call.

The company also revealed that Facebook app’s lay claim to an average of 46 minutes per day.

That’s an impressive figure, especially considering the stat doesn’t include WhatsApp, the immensely popular messenger app acquired by Facebook in February 2014.

It’s not exactly surprising though – Facebook’s latest population figures reveal the social network boasts 1.49 billion monthly active users as of June.

That’s more than any other social network, and marks an increase of 13 per cent year-on-year.

Of the total monthly active users, approximately 1.31 billion accessed Facebook on mobile devices. That’s a rise of 23 per cent compared to the same time last year.

“Mobile is the engine of our revenue growth, says David Wehner, Facebook’s chief financial officer.

That’s because mobile ads now account for three quarters of Facebook’s $3.83 billion Q2 advertising revenue – that’s up from 62 per cent in Q2 2014.

The company’s total revenue in the three months leading up to June 30 was $4.04 billion, which is growth from the $2.91 billion posted in the same period last year.
