Facebook now has over 1 billion members

Facebook, the largest social networking service in the world, has broken the magic one billion member limit today. It now has more than a billion members using it every month. This follows its App Center going global only two months ago, when its member number was closer to 900 million.

This latest breakthrough makes millionaire founder Mark Zuckerberg’s company equivalent to the world’s third-largest country in ‘population’, after China and India. Already, the number of Facebook members outstrips the populations of the US and Russia combined, and its members are responsible for 1.13 trillion likes, 219 billion photos and 17 billion location check-ins.

According to the BBC, Zuckerberg said: "Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life."

This will undoubtedly increase profits for Facebook, which is already one of the most valuable US companies in the world, with shares that value over £66 billion.

Its nearest competitor, Twitter, only enjoys half of Facebook’s membership with a ‘mere’ 500 million. However, growth for Facebook may slow down as it is reaching saturation point in many countries where it first became established, like the US and UK.

This is just not true!!!

It is at least 1 billion - 1.

I joined several years ago to see what the fuss was all about and see what my kids were on about.

I have tried to delete my account but have not been able to.

Facebook make it easy to open an account but impossible to close it.

Every few months, I get an email from facebook about someone tagging me or something equally worrying.. This makes you login and re-activate your dormant account.

My account that I no longer want, need and want to delete is now counted as being one of the active accounts.

How many of these 1 billion (-1) accounts are actualy being used?

Utter nonsense. This is nothing more than a stunt.
