Facebook Messenger update lets you share location maps

Facebook has updated its Messenger app to let you share locations with people more easily.

The new version of Facebook Messenger allows you to send a location, in the form of a standalone map-containing message, as part of a conversation.

This location can be your current one, of course, but it can also be another location of your choosing – a meeting point, for example.

All you need to do is tap the More icon or the location pin at the bottom of the Messenger screen. You can then search for a location and share it as an in-message map.

Facebook seems to be at pains to point out that this new feature doesn’t mean that the company is grabbing any more location-specific data about you in the background.

“Messenger does not get location information from your device in the background—only each time you select a location and tap Send when you use the Messenger app,” says Facebook on the corresponding official news post.

Facebook claims that the new location sharing feature replaces the old one, so this is very much part of the Messenger setup from now on. It’s rolling out now.
