Facebook knows app is killing iPhone batteries, will fix soon

Facebook has pledged to fix a flaw in its iOS app, which is reportedly causing users to experience rapid battery drain.

The issue sees the Facebook app continue to run in the background, even when the Background App Refresh setting is disabled.

Some users have reported Facebook has been responsible for up to 39 per cent of battery consumption over a six day period.

The data, published to the MacRumors forum, showed the app running for 8.6 hours in the background, despite only 4 hours of on screen time.

While no cause has been established just yet, speculation has suggested silent audio on auto-playing videos continuing to run in the background once the app is closed, may be the culprit.

Facebook hasn’t officially acknowledged what’s causing the problem, but a spokesperson told TechCrunch the fix is coming soon.

We have heard reports of some people experiencing battery issues with our iOS app. We’re looking into this and hope to have a fix in place soon,” the spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday.

Those affected by the issue might resolve to delete the Facebook app for now, but help is at hand in the near future.
