Facebook is testing emoji-friendly ‘profile tags’

Facebook is testing a new profile-tagging feature that follows suit from rival social network LinkedIn.

Aptly dubbed ‘profile tags’, the feature aims to make it easier to quickly gauge what a person is like and what they’re interested in.

“Profile tags are a creative tool that lets you and your friends add tags to your profile to highlight the things that describe you and what you’re into,” said Facebook, in a statement sent to The Verge.

The tags are free-form, so you can create your own tags with multiple words and even emoji.

A word of warning: your friends can also tag you with words and phrases that they think describe you.

If that happens, you’ll get a notification that gives you the chance to accept or decline tags.

Once you accept a tag, it becomes visible to everyone, so you might want to think carefully before giving a thumbs-up to “worst human ever”.

If you ignore the notification, the tags will remain pending – only you and your friend will be able to see them.

And of course, Facebook being Facebook, your friends will be able to “like” your tags.

The tags will appear in descending order based upon the number of likes. That “absolutely useless” tag jokingly added to your profile by a friend doesn’t seem so funny anymore, right?

The feature is currently only being tested in New Zealand, and Facebook hasn’t given word on when we’ll see it arrive in the UK or US.
