Facebook notifications

Facebook has announced a radical revamp of the Notifications tab within its iOS and Android applications.

The new page, which is rolling out from today in the US, brings plenty more than the comments, likes and tags offered by the current iteration.

Once they receive the update, users will be greeted with Google Now-like cards that also feature news stories, weather updates, trending topics and sports scores from their favourite teams.

There will also be movie showtimes and restaurant suggestions based on your location, which are linked into Facebook Pages and reviews. Reminders of milestones – beyond only birthdays – in friends’ lives will also be added to the mix.

Users will be able to personalise the information and add further cards at any time. Meanwhile, they’ll continue to be able to view all of the usual content they’re accustomed to within Notifications.

“Today, we’re starting to roll out an expanded, personalised Notifications tab in the Facebook app,” wrote project manager Keith Peiris, on the Newsroom blog.

“Every day, people use their notifications to keep up-to-date with their friends and family. We’ve heard feedback that people wanted to add important information that they can easily see, all in one place.”

The company says it plans to "periodically" add new cards as it receives feedback from users.

There’s no word yet on when the company plans to expand the revamp to other territories, or to Facebook on the web.
