There’s now a Technics SL-1200 that costs almost £6k

A British hi-fi company fine-tuned Technics' new SL-1200GAE. And the result will cost you an eye-watering £5764.

The modified deck is called the Timestep EVOke. Devon-based company Timestep has been working on modifications for the SL-1200/SL-1210 models for a number of years, taking the archetypal DJ deck and transforming it into an audiophile-friendly vinyl spinner.

Technics has already made so many upgrades for the basic GAE model that it’s felt justified in slapping a £2,000 price tag on it, but Timestep has taken the liberty of going the extra mile.

The EVOke sees some of the familiar changes that Timestep is renowned for – a new, external power supply and a replacement tonearm in the form of an SME IV. It also comes pre-fitted with an Audio Technica AT-33PTG/II MC cartridge.

Admittedly, the finished package looks pretty impressive, but Technics itself has not approved these modifications, so there's no word on an official warranty.

I'd like to hear this against the Linn Akurate LP12 which is a similar price, a whisker over £6k. There are also a number of others from SME, Roksan, Rega, Clearaudio and a few more besides that really should go toe to toe with this. Since pretty much everything out there is belt drive it would be really interesting to hear if they have finally nailed direct drive with this combination.
