Existing webOS TVs might not be webOS 2.0 upgradable

If you bought a connected LG TV in 2014, you might about to be left disappointed as the company reveals existing webOS models might not be upgradeable to webOS 2.0.

Despite the newly unveiled webOS 2.0 platform being built around the original software, LG has suggest that a downloadable patch might not be available to introduce the latest features such as improved programme recommendations and slicker navigation.

Although yet to fully rule out the possibility of a patch, the Korean manufacturer, speaking at CES 2015, announced that it is currently unsure as to whether or not existing webOS TVs will be upgradeable to the latest iteration of the Smart TV platform.

“We are not sure yet if that [a webOS 2.0 update for existing webOS systems] is going to be available but as soon as we know you will let you know,” Darren Petersen told TrustedReviews at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Suggesting a decision could be made in the coming weeks, he added: “We will be finding out quite soon but we don’t know yet.

Although existing models might not be webOS 2.0 upgradeable, nearly all of LG’s 2015 line-up of connected televisions will run the revamped OS.

“All of the 2015 smart TVs, apart from a couple of models, will have webOS 2.0,” Petersen stated. “Just a couple of the low-end models are carrying over the previous webOS platform.”

This all-encompassing webOS 2.0 support will cover everything from 42-inch LCD models to the company’s larger OLED and Quantum Dot offerings.
