Yet another price barrier blown to smithereens.
Evesham and Samsung seem to be in a straight fight to see who can make the most affordable yet well specified HD LCD TVs on the market. First Evesham put out a 42in 1080i set for under £1,400 then Samsung made a 26 incher for £600. Now Evesham is back to unveil a 20.1in model for under £350!
Being simply known as the ‘HD Ready 20.1in Widescreen LCD’ may lack some marketing punch, but for what it lacks in naming style it more than makes up for with substance. It boasts a simply superb 1680 x 1050 resolution, a zippy 8ms response time, 600:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness and wide 140 degree viewing angle.
On the downside, the obvious omission from a television at such a low price point is HDMI, instead there is DVI, D-Sub, S-Video and 2x SCART. Despite this an integrated tuning system covers 8/G, D/K, I and L/L’ and support for PAL, SECAM and NTSC. Audio is stereo NICAM/A2 and the integrated speakers are both capable of 10W output. Dimensions are svelt at 523 x 433 x 210mm and its light at 8.15Kg.
A three year warranty comes as standard and it has been made available immediately. I hear the words “Bedroom TV Bedroom TV Bedroom TV” repeating endlessly in my head. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything though, this morning I kept hearing “Kill Paris Hilton, Kill Paris Hilton, Kill Paris Hilton” and I didn’t act on that… at least not before lunch.
