Is this insane Cyber Monday US deal a sign the Essential Phone (PH-1) isn’t selling as well as Andy Rubin’s company would hope?
We thought the Black Friday price cut to $449 ($249 off) was a surprising development, but things have gone much further as deals week continues.
Amazon is selling the Android handset for just $399 and is bundling in the clip-on 360 degree camera accessory too.
The phone has flagship-rivaling specs, an edge-to-edge display (that’s decidedly notch-free), a dual rear-facing camera and a premium titanium/ceramic build.
The phone runs Android 7.1.1 right now, but the firm has just launched an Android Oreo beta meaning the update will arrive before too long.
The modular camera add-on is described as the world’s smallest 360-degree camera. It’s advantageous because it gets its power from the phone itself.
It captures both 360-degree videos and stills and has a 12-megapixel fish-eye imager with 4K video captured at 30fps.

The total combined cost of the bundle, before the dramatic price cut, was $900, so the current $399 price tag represents some seriously good value.
Whether there’s more to the discount than meets the eye remains to be seen. Has the Essential phone flopped at the box office? Or is the firm just trying to get the handset into more consumers’ hands to help build word of mouth?
