Elon Musk wants to build an electric plane

Tesla chief and all round genius Elon Musk has been speaking about his idea for an electrically powered aeroplane.

For some reason, the whole concept of electric aeroplanes sounds like a comically bad idea, right up there with chocolate teapots. But it’s that sort of narrow thinking that leaves you and I scrapping out a living and Elon Musk raking in the millions.

Musk has been mulling over an idea for an electric plane for a good six or seven years now, and he revealed (via Engadget) that he had returned to the idea at a recent Q&A session at the recent at the Hyperloop Pod competition awards ceremony.

Asked what his next big idea was, Musk had this to say:

“I have been thinking about the vertical takeoff and landing electric jet a bit more. I think I have something that might close. I’m quite tempted to do something about it.”

You can view the video of the event at the bottom of the page.

You might thing that this is a slightly daunting or unusual idea, but coming from Musk it automatically becomes a lot more plausible.

After all, this is the man who created desirable luxury electric cars and commercially viable space flight, and who set the ball rolling on a transport system that fires people through giant tubes. Keep your eyes – but presumably not your ears – to the skies on this one.
