EE TV gets BBC Red Button, but still no sign of Netflix, Sky or 4oD

The fledgling EE TV streaming box has been granted a few new services and apps, but don’t get too excited folks.

The box, which still can’t boast the likes of Netflix, ITV Player, Sky Now TV, Amazon Instant Video and 4oD has at least added access to the BBC’s Red Button.

That means folks who’ve opted to grab the box as part of their broadband package will be able to watch stuff like live snooker while Eastenders is on, just like everyone else in the UK.

As well as the Red Button (which sits alongside the iPlayer, BBC News and BBC Sport apps) today’s update also brings fringe apps like Deezer and Daily Motion into play. They’ll join 70 live freeview channels and on demand content from the likes of Wuaki.

The Wi-Fi set-top box and DVR allows inter-connectivity with the home TV as well as the user’s smartphones and tablets, enabling users to tune into to live television on any of the devices.

The platform, which EE hopes will give it a foothold in the living room beyond broadband and mobile data, was launched back in October.

EE is bundling the set top box, which it outlandishly claims is worth £300, for an extra tenner a month with a 17Mbps broadband package.

There’s also the small matter of having to sign up for an 18 month contract and a $15.75 a month EE line rental. Still not the most exciting proposition in the world, but it’s early days yet.
