EE introduces Swap, offers 4G upgrades mid-contract

EE has announced that customers can upgrade to 4G if they’re at least six months into an existing contract via the newly announced Swap service.

Anyone who signed up for an 18 or 24-month 3G contract on Orange, T-Mobile or EE six months ago can transfer to a 4GEE contract from £49.

Users can access the ‘Swap’ service at EE stores or mobile retailers like Carphone Warehouse as long as they are six months into any existing Pay Monthly contract. Anyone in the last 45 days of their contract can upgrade for free too.

“With smartphone innovation moving at a relentless pace, we realise that some customers want to move to the latest handset at the earliest possible opportunity,” said Pippa Dunn, Chief Consumer Marketing Officer at EE. “That’s why we’ve introduced ‘Swap’ to sit alongside our existing upgrade offers – providing a new, simple and easily affordable option for pay monthly customers to move to the latest 4G smartphones.”

Customers will be required to make a one-off payment in order to upgrade to 4GEE, which start at £49 for the £51 per month 4GEE contract of 20GB of data, unlimited texts and calls.

The £36 1.5GB of data, unlimited texts and calls tariff will set anyone looking to opt for the cheapest tariff a staggering £249 one-off cost.

However, that payment will allow customers to swap their current handset, as long as its devoid of “significant dents, scratches, or cracks on the screen”, for a sparkling new 4G LTE compatible device like the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One or even the highly anticipated iPhone 5S expected to launch at Apple’s event this evening.

The Swap service starts on September 17. The 4GEE coverage extends to 105 UK locations or 60 per cent of the country’s population. 20 UK locations also now have access to the double speed 4G that offers average speeds of 24-30Mbps.
