EA expects PS5 and new Xbox within ‘5-6 years’

Despite the rise of digital gaming and the current crop of next-gen consoles being a matter of days old, EA has suggest that it expects a PS5 and new Xbox console within “five-six years.”

With tomorrow’s PS4 release date to see the Sony branded gamer join last week’s Xbox One arrival in the next-gen console race, publisher EA is already looking to the future, predicting replacement consoles are just half a decade away.

Despite Microsoft stating that the Xbox One lifecycle will be “conservatively a decade,” EA expects that a PS5 and potential Xbox replacement will surface much quicker that the seven and eight years it took for the PS3 and Xbox 360 to be superseded respectively.

Talking on the outgoing PS3 and Xbox 360,EA Studios EVP Patrick Soderlund stated: “This console cycle may have gone on a little bit longer than I would have wanted.”

He added: “You have seen games like The Last of Us and GTA 5 at the end of a cycle which perhaps you would not have expected a few years ago.”

Looking to the future and what will eventually replace the PS4 and Xbox One, Soderlund told MVC: “A five, six year gap is what I expect going forward.”

With tomorrow to see both the Xbox One and PS4 on sale in the UK, gaming has been given a new lease of life in time for the lucrative festive period.

While the Xbox One costs a premium £429 – thanks in part to being bundled with a Kinect sensor -, the PS4 price tag has been set at a more conservative £349.
