E Ink has confirmed it is working on a wraparound smartwatch display that could be introduced with future wearables.

The company is best known for its eReader displays incorporated in devices like the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, but it is also responsible for existing wearable displays like those from Seiko and Archos.

Current E Ink smartwatch display are small and square to keep the overall device low-powered.

However, Engadget has discovered E Ink is working on full wraparound curved displays that would take over a great portion of future smartwatches.

The E Ink curved display would be able to display content from one length to the other, letting you change not only the face of your watch, but the design of the strap as well.

Apparently, you could be able to download designer’s own custom content for the watch, but also create your own for a more individual look.

Of course, all that extra screen real estate means that such a device would be able to present more information to the user.

For example, this could be your heart rate monitor data, recent messages, weather information, GPS navigational instructions and other important, glanceable information.

There’s no word on any E Ink partnerships for this curved, wraparound display or any scheduled device launch dates as yet.

2014 has certainly been the year to see the wearable space explode with new devices. CES in particular was used to launch a whole host of new wearable technology and fitness trackers, along with MWC a month later.

These launches included the Samsung Gear Fit, Pebble Steel, Razer Nab and Sony SmartBand.

Apple is expected to wade into the wearable space later this year, as it is heavily rumoured to be unveiling the iWatch alongside the iPhone 6 later this year.
