Dyson Supersonic is a £299 hair dryer that reduces noise

Dyson is known for its impressively sucky vacuum cleaners, but now the UK firm is hoping to blow you away with its first ever hair dryer.

The Dyson Supersonic is a new hair dryer that sets out to “rethink” how we dry our hair.

Dyson poured £50 million into the Supersonic’s development, including building an entire laboratory dedicated to “investigating the science of hair”.

The result is a hair dryer that Dyson claims is eight times faster than rival hair dryers, despite being half the weight. That’s compared to Japan’s 10 best-selling hair dryers, a country where 96% of the population own such a device. And it’s all thanks to the Dyson V9, a small, digital motor that was created specifically for the Dyson Supersonic.

“Hair dryers can be heavy, inefficient, and make a racket,” says company founder James Dyson. “By looking at them further, we realised that they can also cause extreme heat damage to hair.”

“I challenged Dyson engineers to really understand the science of hair and develop our version of a hair dryer, which we think solves these problems,” he continues.

A big part of Dyson’s efforts on the Supersonic went to reducing the noise. This was achieved in a number of ways, one of which is the inclusion of acoustic silences embedded in the handle – that’s where the motor is located.

What’s more, because the motor is in the handle, the actual dryer portion of the Dyson Supersonic is bladeless.

The Dyson Supersonic features four heat settings, three airflow settings, and a cold shot. It also ships with three magnetic attachments for different drying approaches.

But here’s the catch: the Dyson Supersonic will set you back an incredible £299. Yep, we’re officially blown away.

The hair dryer will be available from Dyson’s website starting in June.
