Dropbox iOS update will allow you to create new Office documents

Seeing as they both operate rival cloud storage platforms, Microsoft and Dropbox seemed to be unlikely bedfellows. However, the two firms continue to snuggle up closer to each other and have today expanded upon their alliance.

An update to the Dropbox for iOS, coming in the next few weeks, will allow folks to create new Microsoft Office documents from directly within the app.

In a post on its official blog, the company said users can create Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, save them to a folder and then access them through Office on any device.

The firm says the update will mean users will no longer wait until they’re at their computer before starting work on a project, or document.

Dropbox’s latest iOS app, which will be available for both iPhone and iPad users, will also introduce the Commenting platform unveiled for web users last week.

“Now you can comment on files from your iPhone or iPad – so you can gather feedback or respond to discussions even when you’re on the go. To bring someone into the conversation about a file, just use the @ symbol followed by their name or email address,” the post read.

“If someone mentions you in a comment or weighs in on a file where you’re already part of the conversation, the app will automatically notify you, so you can stay in the loop and respond from anywhere.”

Lastly, Dropbox is introducing a rather self-explanatory Recents tab where folks will be able to see anything they’ve recently viewed, uploaded, renamed or edited.

However, the most noteworthy of the three is the ability to create Office documents.

Recently Microsoft make it possible to open, sync and save Dropbox documents from within Office Online, while Dropbox app users can also edit their files directly from the app. The love affair continues.
