Dropbox Carousel update helps mobile users free up space

Dropbox has updated its Carousel application for iOS and Android in order to help users maximise the free space available on their devices.

The free Carousel app, which backs up and organises the smartphone photos automatically, will now offer to delete those photos and video clips it has already safely stowed.

Carousel will explain to users that it can free up X-amount of space without threatening the photos and videos resting in their cloud account.

Of course, users will still be able to access all of those files, but by using Carousel rather than the default gallery app on the phone.

The idea is to minimise the free space needlessly taken up by files and should end those moments of panic when smartphone photographers come to take a new pic only to be informed they’re out of storage.

On its official blog the Carousel team wrote: “Running out of space on your phone is a pain. It always happens at the worst time: your toddler taking her first step or a friend blowing out birthday candles. By the time you’ve picked a few old photos to delete, you’ve missed the moment.

“Carousel can help you avoid that hassle. Our new feature, available soon on Android and iOS, helps free up space on your phone by identifying photos that are already backed up in Dropbox and removing them from your phone’s local storage. You’ll still be able to access them on your phone using the Carousel app, and of course you can see them on your tablet and the web.”

Elsewhere Carousel is also getting a new Flashback feature, which is essentially like the Timehop feature you may have seen dominating your Facebook feed in recent times. The firm says it's coming to iOS and Android soon.
