Dropbox boosts security with Touch ID on iOS

Dropbox has just updated its iOS app, adding Touch ID functionality to the cloud storage service.

This means that you can now set up your app to unlock via the fingerprint scanner instead of a plain old passcode.

Integrating Touch ID into Dropbox should make it far more difficult for your account to be compromised at handset level.

Many users will be glad to hear the good news after Dropbox was embroiled in a security fiasco last week that saw 7-million usernames and passwords misappropriated.

An unscrupulous Reddit user began leaking the information, putting hundreds of Dropbox accounts at risk.

Dropbox insisted its own servers had ‘not been hacked’, instead blaming third-party services.

We’d previously detected these attacks and the vast majority of the passwords posted have been expired for some time now,” explained the firm.

“All other remaining passwords have been expired as well.”

Apple announced it was opening up Touch ID to developers at its September event in Cupertino.

The feature had previously been accessibly only by Apple’s own services, namely unlocking your handset and making app store purchases.

The version 3.5 update also optimized the app for Apple’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets, meaning it should run more smoothly.

Other additions include a fix for previewing RTF files and improved stability.
