John Romero and Adrian Carmack, co-founders of id Software and creators of Doom, have reunited to work on a new game – Blackroom.

Blackroom has launched on Kickstarter with a $700,000 funding target. At the time of writing the game has already raised nearly $10,000.

Blackroom is “a visceral, varied and violent shooter that harkens back to classic FPS play” according to the Kickstarter page, “with a mixture of exploration, speed, and intense, weaponized combat.

“Use fast, skillful movement to dodge enemy attacks, circle-strafe your foes, and rule the air as you rocket jump in the single- and multiplayer modes. BLACKROOM launches with unique multiplayer maps and robust modding support for the community to make diabolical creations of their own design.”

Blackroom is currently scheduled to launch in ‘Winter 2018’ and only on PC.

Backers can pledge as little as $1 or as much as $10,000. The highest tier rewards backers with the label “Hoxar Chief Executive Officer’ and includes a two-hour one-on-one level design Skype session with Romero himself, an invite to the launch party (though travel is not included) and input into designing one of the HoloSims in the game as well as all rewards from previous tiers.

With Carmack and Romero reuniting this Kickstarter is sure to be a big hit with fans. The thought of two of the pioneers of the FPS genre coming together to make a new shooter will excite anyone who has spent even a moment with Doom. Even as someone sceptical of the whole Kickstarter philosophy, I’m excited to see what they do and hope they have the funds to realise their vision.
