Denon has overhauled its headphone range with a new set of designs. There are eight new models for this half of 2012, spread over four ranges aimed at different lifestyle groups, on sale between now and October.
The ranges are Music Maniac for audiophiles, Globe Cruiser for frequent travellers, Exercise Freak for sporty types (and which is tuned for a slightly accentuated bass) and Urban Raver (which is tuned to suit techno, trance, hip-hop and drum ’n’ bass).
Each of these categories also has its own smartphone app, available now on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Among the Globe Cruiser models is the £400 Denon AH-NCW500, arriving in September, which has noise cancellation, integrated amplifier and Bluetooth aptX (for higher quality wireless operation). It has a control wheel and integrated microphone for full control of iPhone, iPad and other Bluetooth devices. There’s a 10-hour battery, chargeable by USB, and a cable for non-wireless use. The headphones fold up for carrying and Denon provides an accompanying travel app.
Denon’s new fitness in-ear headphones include the sweat-proof AH-W150. They have Bluetooth 3.0 wireless connectivity, seven-hour rechargeable battery, an integrated amplifier and controls and microphones for using on the move. The companion Denon Sport App was created with MapMyFITNESS and uses GPS for mapping and speed tracking, a workout journal and access to an online community.
Urban Raver currently includes two models, the over-ear AH-D400 with a 50mm driver, integrated amplifier and control wheel for Apple devices; and the £250 in-ear AH-C300, detailed here, which has 11mm drivers, mini control wheel, microphone and silicon ear tips. The Denon Club App has EQ settings, song lyrics, artist information, new artist discovery and sharing through Facebook and Twitter updates.
The flagship model for ‘Music Maniacs’ is the £1000 AH-D7100, previewed here. These acoustically transparent reference-standard headphones have 50mm ‘Free Edge Nano Fibre’ drivers and real mahogany wood ear cups. The ear cups have a ball and socket design and pentagonal-shaped ear pads with memory foam. The cable is detachable so your own hi-fi cable can be used if you prefer. Its accompanying Denon Audio app serves as a music player for iPhone or iPod touch and includes customisable EQ settings and TuneIn internet radio.
