Dell’s latest G-series gaming laptops marry affordability and decent looks

Dell has launched a trio of new G-series gaming laptops that, despite carrying pretty modest price tags, don’t look terrible. Get all the details on the new Dell laptops including their specs, price and release date below.

Dell G3, G5 and G7 gaming laptop specs

Dell unveiled the G3, G5 and G7 laptops at a press briefing attended by Trusted Reviews at the start of April. The laptops target the same market as the company’s older Inspiron 15 gaming devices, and will retail for as little as $749. Despite the affordable price tag, by gaming standards, the new trio of notebooks offer some pretty impressive hardware.

The G7 is the flagship laptop in Dell’s new line and is the only one of the three to feature an Intel core i9 H-series CPU option. Below it, the G5’s hardware caps out at an Intel 8th-gen i7-8750HQ CPU and 16GB of RAM.

Elsewhere, both 15-inch laptops sport fairly similar specifications. You’ll be able to pick between Nvidia GTX 1050, GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1060 GPU options and FHD or UHD screen options – although, given the lack of higher-end GPU options, don’t expect either to play games at 60fps in 4K on the latter.

The G3 is the most affordable option in Dell’s G series and will be available in 15 and 17-inch versions. Its specs are pretty much identical to the G5 except for its lack of a 4K screen option.

You can see how the three laptops specs compare in the table below.

The only real downside is the wealth of hard disk-only options across all three models. Hard disks offer significantly slower performance than their SSD rivals. The lower-end models could suffer some pretty annoying load times for gamers as a result.

Dell G3, G5 and G7 gaming laptop prices

Dell hasn’t confirmed UK prices for the new devices yet, but in the US the lowest-spec G7 will retail for $849. The bottom-end G5 will retail for $799. The lowest-end G3 15-inch will go for $749, and the bottom of the barrel 17 will be available for $799.

Dell also warned that some of the hard disk storage configurations wouldn’t necessarily be available in “every market”. Hopefully, this means those hard disk-only models won’t appear in the UK.
