David Haye’s comeback fight will be the first boxing bout filmed in VR

It seems every week represents a breakthrough in the world of virtual reality. This week we’ve had two.

First, Alton Towers announced plans for its first VR rollercoaster, now former Heavyweight Champion of the World David Haye is bringing 360-degree video to the fight game.

Haye’s comeback fight at London’s O2, on Saturday night, will shown in VR thanks to a partnership between promoters Salter Brothers Entertainment and IM360 (via Wareable).

The former has produced VR experiences for the likes of Taylor Swift and Red Bull and will now be turning its attentions to Haye’s match up with Mark de Mori.

The 360-degree camera will be ringside for the fight, which was only deemed newsworthy enough to be broadcast on Dave TV in the UK.

The experience will be enabled via a new Hayemaker 360 app for Android devices. If you have a VR headset like a Gear VR or Google Cardboard you’ll slot in your device to get the full experience.

Otherwise you’ll need to move your phone and table around in order to experience the full visual spectrum being offered.

“I’m fascinated by new emerging technologies, and am constantly looking to embrace the digital world in order to connect with my fans,” Haye said.

“With this in mind, I’m thrilled to bring immersive VR technology to big time boxing — allowing the public to stand alongside me in the ring, letting them see what I see and experience every punch.”

The fight airs at 9:45pm GMT on Saturday night.
