CrossOver lets you run Windows programs on Chromebooks

Codeweavers has offered a program that allows you to run Windows on Mac and Linux systems for some time, but now its turning its attention to Android.

A technical preview of CrossOver Android was launched this week, which will allow you to run Windows apps on your Intel-based Chromebook or Android tablet.

What’s more, the new software is entirely free at this point, and you’ll be able to run programs such as Steam and Office 2010.

The new version of the program is still a work in progress, however, so if you’re tempted to try it out, be warned that not all Windows apps are guaranteed to work.

You’ll also need to have an Intel-based device in order for CrossOver Android to work, which limits the choices somewhat.

Due to the Intel requirement, CrossOver is limited to Chromebooks such as the Asus Flipbook, Acer Chromebook r11, and the Chromebook Pixel.

But the software should also work with Intel-based Android tablets, and there are likely to be further updates which could see CrossOver extended to other devices.

Using the program will allow you to run multiple apps simultaneously as you would in Windows, plus, you can use Windows apps alongside native Android apps.

You can sign up for access by heading over to the Code Weavers site and entering your details.

The preview is only available to those who registered for initial access, but signing up should get you access to the full beta when it’s released.
