Creator Ci40 is the Internet of Things in a box

If you’re technically-minded and you want to make your own wireless Internet of Things system, the Creator Ci40 is one of the simplest ways of doing so.

So what exactly does it do? It helps your appliances and devices talk to each other and to the cloud. If you’re struggling to make sense of the many boards, accessories, hardware and software interfaces, connectivity standards and APIs, this could be the kit for you.

It includes all the hardware building blocks you’ll need to make your own IoT system from scratch, but also the open source software frameworks, network stacks and all the cloud connectivity capabilities needed to connect and authenticate devices to the cloud.

The hub has a 550MHz dual-core, dual-threaded MIPS chip running OpenWrt, and is kitted out with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet. There are two battery-powered MikroElektronica Clicker boards to add sensors and another three MikroElektronika Click boards to measure temperature, detect motion and control a relay.

You’ll need a little bit of knowhow to get it up and running, but it looks a lot simpler than starting from scratch.

It’s made by Imagination Technologies, the company that owns radio company Pure and that makes semiconductors and System on Chips.

It’s fast approaching its £20,000 funding goal and still has 22 days to go. If it’s successful, it should ship in April, and cost £70 for the full kit.
